E2 Visa Renewal Strategies – Renewal in Mexico May Be Possible

Our topic today is processing U.S. non-immigrant business visa renewals in a third country.

What do we mean by ‘third country’?

In this case, ‘third country’ means a country that is not the country of origin for the visa holder. And it also means a country that is not the United States (which issued the visa).

Third country e-visa renewal is a a strategy that allows non-citizens to renew their business visas in a country that is different from the country that issued the visa.

A common scenario would be a European National that has a U.S. E2 Visa in his or her passport. When it is close to the time to renew the E2 Visa – the visa holder could return to their home country in Europe for renewal.

Alternate Option: Renew the E2 Visa in Mexico.

E Visa Renewal in Mexico – Convenient and Close

Mexico is close to the United States. Travel distance to Mexico is much closer than, for example, returning to a European country.

Also, Mexico has authorized the ability for Third Country Nationals to process this type of visa renewal in Mexico.

There is one requirement to keep in mind: The visa renewed in Mexico cannot be for a different type of visa. If you were issued an E2 Visa in the U.S. – then only that E2 visa can be renewed in Mexico.

Most business visa renewals for Third Country Nationals can be done in Mexico. Exceptions: B1/B2 or H2 visa renewals cannot be done in Mexico.
